The sport of Lawn Bowling came to the United States from England in the 1890's.The original greens situated at Hazelwood Park were constructed in 1919. The greens were originally "Crown" bowling greens, which involve a slight mound or crown down the center of the lawn.
Crown Bowls are very rare in the world today as most clubs in the world prefer the flat green version and almost all championships today are played on the flat surface. The original club had a good seventy year run but faded out in the late 1980's due to a decline in memberships.
After a good thirty plus year "hiatus", The modern day bowling greens have been completely constructed from scratch, starting with a robust drainage system to cope with harsh New England weather. The building phase was completed in the spring of 2022. Through the tireless work of The Friends of Hazelwood Park and the dedication of The City Of New Bedford Recreation and Parks Department, we now have two eight rink Lawn Bowling and Championship Croquet Greens.
We at the club are fortunate to have the City Of New Bedford as an active partner as they have committed to maintaining our beautiful greens. They are working hard to give the city not only a place where anyone can enjoy this wonderful sport, but are striving to have a facility that can host regional tournaments as well as national championships. The members have already stepped up by bringing in the silverware, winning the very first regional tournament that we hosted in 2023.
Club Members must purchase a City of New Bedford Hazelwood Greens membership.
For the 2024 season
(March 15th to November 15th) the cost is $100.
This is the City's fee for the maintenance of the greens.
For the 2024 season, the club committee have voted to collect no additional fees.
